How to use this activity

1

Grab some cups and start building

Before you start: You’ll need 6–10 plastic or paper cups and a flat surface. The activity is on page 1, and the grown-up guide is on page 2.

Start with 6 cups and invite your child to build a tower that stands on its own. Let them decide how to arrange the cups. There’s more than one way to build.

2

See what else you can try

Ready for another challenge? Add up to 4 more cups and see if your child can make the tower taller. If you have cups in different sizes, try mixing those in too.

A wobble or a tumble gives them a chance to try a different idea. You can offer help, take a break, or come back to it another day.

3

Talk about it afterward

“What was the hardest part of building your tower?”
“How did you feel when something didn’t work?”
“What’s something you’re proud of trying today?”
“What would you like to try next time?”

Did your child try a new arrangement or ask for help? Tell them you noticed. Their effort is worth celebrating, whether the tower stays up or falls.

When things get wobbly

It can be disappointing when a tower falls. Give your child a moment, then try:

“It’s okay to feel disappointed. What would you like to try next?”

“That didn’t work the way you hoped. Do you have another idea?”

“Would you like some help or a little break?”
